AIA Colorado Committees & Volunteer Opportunities

Each committee is organized to support existing programs within the organization, to strengthen membership activities and to develop new educational opportunities for AIA membership in areas of greatest interest to the profession and the community. AIA Colorado members are encouraged to become active in these committees. Please contact the AIA Colorado office at 303.446.2266 to join a committee.

GET INVOLVED: Volunteer Opportunities 

The AIA/AGC/ACEC Liaison Committee is a joint venture with the Associated General Contractors of Colorado and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado. The committee plans roundtable discussions that benefit the three organizations and runs the Curt Dale Roles & Relationships Conference.

 

The Architect Colorado Editorial Board is charged with creating an editorial calendar and for reviewing and recommending content for AIA Colorado’s quarterly publication, Architect Colorado.

 

The Building Enclosure Council (BEC) works to increase awareness of building envelope design as a critical aspect of the successful construction and performance of buildings by fostering education of industry professionals. 

 

The Design Awards Program Committee seeks to honor works of distinction of AIA Colorado members and to bring public attention the the outstanding architectural services provided by members of AIA Colorado. 

 

The Design Conference Committee is responsible for the planning and execution of the annual statewide Design Conference. Committee members develop the conference theme, invite speakers and coordinate the schedule. 

 

The Disaster Assistance Committee was developed to work with state and local governments to provide assistance in evaluating/assessing the safety of sites and structures that may have been impacted as the result of a disaster in our region.

 

The Emerging Professionals Coalition works to address the needs of emerging professionals including students, associates/interns and newly licensed architects.

  • Intern Development Program: The Intern Development Program (IDP) continues to gain momentum in Colorado. The IDP coordinator and AIA Colorado staff send out more than 200 packets each year. The coordinator provides programs at CU Boulder and CU Denver, as well as firms interested in the merits of the IDP program. The coordinator also nominates firms for the AIA/NCARB IDP Firm of the Year award.
  • Intern Advocacy Committee: Chaired by the IDP state coordinator, the Intern Advocate Committee was established to address the needs of the architectural intern community in Colorado. These needs include help with navigation through the licensing process, dissemination of information pertinent to interns, help with creating mentoring relationships, organization of activities that educate interns as well as organization of activities to help the community through volunteer efforts.
  • Student Advocacy Committee: Made up of student members and AIAS leaders, this group is responsible for communication about and planning of programs to benefit architecture students and to encourage participation and partnership between AIAS and AIA Colorado.
  • Young Architects Committee:  Members include the state and local Young Architects Forum Leaders (YAF) and AIA Architects licensed 10 years or less. This committee is responsible for communication about and coordinating programs and services for the young architect members of AIA Colorado.

The Government Affairs Committee is primarily involved in state legislative activities and educating legislators on issues that are important to architects. 

  • Government Advisory Board: An anticipated future committee charged with identifying and supporting the potential for AIA members running for local or state government. 
    Advocacy Sub-Committee: Established in 2007, this is a sub-committee of the Government Affairs Committee. The committee is charged with getting feedback from the membership and making recommendations on advocacy initiatives for the coming year. 

The History Committee is responsible for researching, compiling and documenting the history of AIA Colorado and individual members that have made a significant impact on the organization.

 

The Membership Outreach Committee is responsible for welcoming new members and familiarizing them with AIA Colorado and the local chapters (including how the organization functions, how to get involved, etc.) and for supporting current members (networking, assisting with issues, recognizing member accomplishments).

 

The Practice Management Symposium Committee plans a one-day event dedicated to providing workshops and programs that teach practical business skills (i.e. marketing and business development, human resources, project accounting, public speaking, starting a firm) to architects and their administrative staff.

 

The Professional Development Committee is charged with fostering mentorship and career development for potential and emerging architects. A joint committee with the University of Colorado at Denver.

 

The Public Relations Outreach Committee is responsible for assisting with AIA Colorado’s public relations efforts, both internally and externally (including Colorado Architecture Month). 

 

The Young Architects Awards Gala Committee (YAAG) is responsible for the annual awards program that recognizes the Architectural Education Foundation scholarship award recipients.
